as the snow that falls to the earth

a new year comes and an old year goes
much like the sun melts away the snow

loved ones lost and new ones found
as the world continues round and round

for this life is like a snowflake that falls upon the earth
destined to melt away from the moment of it’s birth

for there is nothing new under the sun
all that has been will eventually be undone

no song that can echo forever down through the ages
or words and poems that can leap beyond it’s pages

no achievements or pursuits or passions or dreams
whether fame or blame eventually float down the stream

from the rushing waters of the melted snow
that came and went just as the years go

what a sad state of affairs that marks the destiny of men
to come from the dust only to return again

and as i sat and pondered upon such things
things too heavy even for the minds of kings

my heart grew heavy and my thoughts grew dim
as i desperately tried to find the meaning to this hymn

no not a hymn but the saddest dirge
a song sung by the sweetest song bird

for though in life there are moments of sweetness
even there within is mixed in bitterness

but as i listened more carefully to this song
i began to realize that i had been all wrong

for it indeed was a most beautiful hymn
a song of praise to be sung unto Him

to the One who sits on the throne
to the One who reigns alone

the forever unchanging One
in the presence of whom all is undone

and on this note the song had more to say
regarding the reason why the night overtakes the day

that you would not know joy without knowing pain
just as you can’t appreciate the sun without the rain

and without the rain there would be no snow
to fall on the earth and make the rivers flow

the river of truth that cries out to all men
along with creation that cries amen!

testifying to us the fact that we are but dust
and so where we are to place our only trust

that there is no hope to be found apart from Him
not in dreams or hopes or anything within

not on the things of this world that fade
but on the One who gives and takes away

for if we were not aware of our ever present need
then what would drive us to even reach out and plead

to reach to the One who has no shadow of turning
the One who sets us on the path of returning

on a road that makes it’s way through the valley
of the shadow of death toward the eternal sea

and no matter how much pain this road may bring
even so i’ll look to Him and continue to sing

the hymn of the song bird that serves to remind me
that this life is quickly fleeting and temporary

and though my life may be a falling snowflake on the roadside
that falls to the ground and melts away to join the river’s tide

i will not fear though the Son is shining
for He only melts me to take me through refining

and to show me that i wasn’t made for here
but to evanesce and leave this earthly sphere

for as a snowflake eventually returns to the sky
so i’ll rise to be with Him when i finally die

and leave this earth of pain and misery
which is but only light and momentary

compared to the glory that awaits me at the end
the loving arms of Jesus, my Savior and Eternal Friend
